ශ්රී ලංකාවේ ප්රධාන පාරිසරික ගැටළු අතර, වන විනාශය, අනෙක් පාරිසරික ගැටලු හා පවතින වෙන් කල නො හැකි බලපෑම නිසා සුවිශේෂී වේ. කෘෂිකර්මාන්තය හේතු කොටගෙන අනවසරයෙන් අල්ලාගත් ඉඩම්, යටිතල පහසුකම් සංවර්ධන ව්යාපෘති, වාණිජ කෘෂිකාර්මික ව්යාපාර, මැණික් කැණීම්, ජනාවාස සහ ගව තෘණ එකතු කරන දේශීය රියදුරන්, එනසාල් වගාව හා ලැව් ගිනි ශ්රී ලංකාවේ වනාන්තර විනාශයේ ප්රධාන ප්රභවයන් වේ. රට ප්රධාන තේ නිෂ්පාදකයෙක් බැවින් තේ වගාවන් සඳහා අවශ්ය වන ඉඩම් ද සැලකිලිමත් විය යුතු කරුණකි. ජනග්රහණයේ බලපෑමත් සමඟ 1980 දශකයේ ප්රධාන ක්රියාවලියක් වූ වාරිමාර්ග ජාල සහ වී බිම් සඳහා වනාන්තර ප්රදේශ එළි කිරීම ද වැදගත් සාධකයකි.
Among major environmental issues in Sri Lanka, deforestation has become significant due to its inseparable impact on other major environmental issues. Encroachments due to agriculture, infrastructure development projects, commercial agriculture ventures, gem mining, settlements and several localized drivers like cattle grazing, cardamom cultivation and forest fires are the main sources of deforestration in Sri Lanka. The country is a major producer of tea and the land required for tea plantations is substantial. Population pressure is also a significant factor as is the removal of forested areas to make way for irrigation networks and paddy fields which was major process in the 1980s.
